Inhale and Smile

Have you ever smelled the pitch,
The sun-parched pitch, when rain hits it?
Have you seen the vapor rise,... Read More
Ascend from road up to the skies?

Have you ever smelled the fish,
Snapper that makes a tasty dish?
Have you seen the ladies sell
All kinds of fish with names they tell?

Have you ever smelled the fruits,
Their fragrance rising above the roots?
Have you seen coconuts fall
From trees that sometimes grow so tall?

Have you ever smelled the spice
Of cinnamon and cloves, the aroma nice?
Have you seen the bright red mace
That drapes nutmeg in tight embrace?

If you did then please be glad,
For sense of smell you richly had.
Take some time to smell a rose;
Do so before your eyelids close

I Am with You
You are not alone;
Our spirits hug.
Despite the miles,
We reach out together ... Read More
To touch the hand of God.

We suffer pain as the feelings build.
Our hearts bleed, yet our courage soar
High above the sorrow.
We tap the heights
From our inner depths.

You are not alone,
For I am here with you.
Together, we feel the hand of God.

Kind Woman

I remember her well
A humble woman
With a caring soulShe looked at us
And saw our need,
And from her heart
She gave us bread,
Our daily bread

Another Morn

I peered outside and observed
The gradual crack of another dawn.
As birds in sweetness sang,
The familiar sound I knew
From childhood innocence.
Their music was unchanged
No mumbled tones.
Their melody tapped
Gently still
On my eager eardrums
A quiet serenade
Of the brand new light
Of another morn.

I peered outside,
And my eyes beheld
A banana tree,
Burdened and bent
By its heavy load.... Read More
Its head lowered
As its offspring rose
Close to its side
To assume the role
When the parent fades
Into the twilight.
The child will carry
The fruit
On another morn

    Grenada medical school fully accredited

Published on Tuesday, July 21, 2009

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada -- The Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP) has granted full accreditation to St George's University School of Medicine.

St George’s University is the first and only private School of Medicine to receive this accreditation.

Full accreditation was previously granted only to public universities in the Caribbean region that met the academic standards and performance criteria mandated by CAAM-HP.

“While St George’s University has been provisionally accredited by CAAM-HP since 2006, full accreditation further secures our place as the premiere medical school in the Caribbean,” said Charles Modica, Chancellor. “This adds to our long list of recognitions and approvals by external bodies, perhaps more than any medical programme in the world.”

St George’s University, founded in 1977 in Grenada, has over 7,800 international alumni, and offers degrees in medicine, veterinary medicine, graduate and undergraduate programmes.

According to a study released in Academic Medicine, Grenada was ranked #1 in USMLE Step One and Step Two/CK in the Caribbean for the highest first-time pass rate among all countries with medical schools in the Caribbean over the past 15 years.

  2. Letter: The education system in Grenada

Published on Monday, August 31, 2009

    Dear Sir:

The holistic education of every citizen of a country is critical for the sustainable development of the country's national economy. Poverty of the population of a nation is as a direct result of the lack of real educational opportunities for it's people. In the Caribbean I must commend the governments of Barbados whether DLP or BLP for the investments that they have made in the education of the Barbadian citizen. The literacy rate in Barbados is one of the highest in the world and this may be responsible for the political and economic stability of the island for many decades.

Apart from Barbados the socialist regime of Fidel / Raul Castro of Cuba continues to provide free quality education to the Cuban people . Cuba has also extended a helping hand to many Caribbean ,South and Central American and African countries in the education of their people to great benefits to the development of the respective countries.

Grenada , Carriacou and Petite Martinque has been a recipient of the scholarship in many disciplines from the People's Republic of Cuba. This relationship began after the People's Revolution in 1979 and continues up to this day, The revolution recognised the importance of having an educated population and introduce free secondary education to all eligible students. This was a milestone in the education of our people. Prior to that many students were denied entry into secondary school because their parents couldn't afford the school fees. It was also during that period that many new secondary schools were constructed to accommodate the student population. Efforts were made to educated the adult population by way of the Center for Popular Education, CPE a very popular program indeed. The revolutionary period was a period when the educational level of our people rose dramatically.

Only recently Sir Roystan Hopkin acknowledge that this was a period when great strides were made in the education of our people.

Following the demise of the revolution, we have seen a progressive decline in the education of our people as the NNP government failed to invest seriously in the education .Even with a former teacher / trade union leader Claris Charles as the Minister of Education politics took precedence over sound educational policies and programs.
